What a strange few weeks it’s been… It was my birthday 12th September, we then went on holiday to Malta 15th-22nd and had a totally fantastic time but unfortunately these happy times have been dulled by the loss of Reggie rat.
We got home from holiday to find out he was in the vets very ill as a (what they thought was an abscess) had grown over night on his face. He was put under anesthetic for them to drain it but lost a lot of blood during the op and was a very weak and poorly rat when we rushed to his side after getting home from the airport.
He was up and down over the next few days, he recovered from the loss of blood/anesthetic but then the “thing” started to grow back on his face. Each day it was growing bigger. On the Tuesday we took him back to the vets, I had been in tears all day because I thought they would say there’s nothing we can do and put him to sleep but, no they wanted to try him on antibiotics just to see if it would shrink. It didn’t the poor little boy was walking around with a lump the size of half a golf ball and, still it was growing. Despite this he was still eating, taking his medicine and running around the room / climbing up and down the bed.
So we waited… It was such a horrible week, we knew at some point we would need to say bye to him but whilst he was eating and still having a great time (he even managed to do some “bin diving” during this time) we had to give him the chance of life.
On the Friday we all got up and Reggie was quiet, he couldn’t finish his medicine on bread and didn’t want to eat a whole chocolate drop. The boy loved his food so I knew he was feeling bad that day and we didn’t want him to suffer – So at about 11.30am 27th September the vet put the boy to sleep.
He’s buried in Danny’s mums garden with that heart that he’s holding/biting in the picture above.
I’m so glad we could have those few extra days with him. We spoiled him so much those last few days with all the food he shouldn’t have had and so many cuddles.
He’s left a huge hole in our hearts though. We miss the fatty ratty lolloping around the bedroom! But Billy bird has helped to cheer us up and keep us busy and, thankfully, Randy Rat seems to be coping without his bro and day by day we’re getting over the pain of loosing this fatty boy a bit too early on in life.
Love you Reg xx RIP.
Some birthday photos…
Birthday present from Ali and Theo, the people I work with. Was so pleased with this! We have read it (yes, already) and have learned some new things… For example when he wiggles his wings that is a greeting
He also got me some travel books/maps to keep the wanderlust alive and another plant.
Apart from card/present opening I didn’t do much because we’ll be in Malta in 2 days
A little catch up on recent life… This may explain why I hardly have any time for blogging / photo editing / anything else!!
Monday-Friday from 8am until anywhere between 3pm and 5pm is the “day job” with the SEO company.
At the moment my routine goes something like this… 8am move laptop to the kitchen table and let the bird out. I work whilst the bird is on his activity centre (clothes airer) and scuttling around on the floor. Yes I need eyes in the back of my head but generally it’s working out fine – he gets play time, I can still get on (even if I do have top stop/start a little to drag him away from Danny’s shoes… the washing machine door which he likes to peck… Whatever it is he shouldn’t be doing!! I do also keep stopping so we have have a couple of 5minute training sessions – At the moment we’re working on getting him over his human hand phobia.
Then somewhere around 12pm-1pm the bird goes home and I get lunch and eat while watching an episode of Dr Who or Hustle on the lovefilm account in the sitting room. Some days I also sit making up a new toy for billy, he loves paper/cardboard on a “parrot skewer” to shred so I’ll be there watching Dr Who surrounded by junk mail methodically piercing each peace onto the stick.
After that I move the laptop back upstairs to my office area so I can get some more work done in peace (no peace if Billy Bird has decided now is the time to do all his whistles and talking!) Billy usually will have childrens telly on in the afternoon until Dan gets home to take over the bird entertainment
Once work is finished it’s usually time to start thinking about what to cook for dinner. Sometimes Dan will cook if I’m really busy and he’s home early. So cooking, eating, washing up, a spot of cleaning, usually takes us up to 7pm by which time I’m just about ready to fall asleep.
7pm – 10pm Billy goes to bed about 7.30pm so usually I’ll watch some Bird Training videos from the guys at Birdtricks.com or catch up on a TV programme and head over to Facebook. I have also discovered bingogodz.com, an online bingo site Other nights we go round to Dan’s parents. The pet rats come out to play about 9pm until we go to sleep. Occasionally if I find I have an extra hour on my hands I’ll log into Zazzle / Shutterstock and add some photos their but unfortunately that’s not very often.
On a Saturday morning I spend 1-2 hours writing and scheduling the posts for the Creative Artists Blog for the next week. (I need to consider if I want to carry on doing this… I may have to stop in the New Year just to give myself some “me time” back! Weekend evenings are usually my time for photo-editing and putting things up for sale in the various online stores.
So there you go…. My life right now mostly revolves around work and billy bird… and cleaning up after Dan A lot different than last year but I’m loving it
